How do I use the Velory Assistant?
The Velory Assistant lets you query and act on your IT inventory using natural language. Instead of navigating through menus and filters, you can ask questions like "Show me all laptops assigned to the Engineering department" and get interactive results instantly.
In this guide
Before you begin
The assistant is available to all Velory users. What data you can access depends on your role and permissions — the assistant respects the same access rules as the rest of Velory.
Open the assistant
Press Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows) from anywhere in Velory. The assistant opens with two sides:
- Chat (left) — where you type questions and see responses
- Canvas (right) — where the assistant places interactive data views, charts, and proposals
What you can ask
Hardware
Ask about your device inventory:
- "Show me all laptops"
- "Who has a MacBook Pro?"
- "Find the device with serial number ABC123"
- "What devices are expiring this quarter?"
- "Show me a breakdown of hardware by category"
Software licenses
Ask about software and licensing:
- "List all active Slack licenses"
- "What software is expiring this month?"
- "Who has a Figma license?"
- "Show me unused licenses across all services"
Employees
Ask about your team:
- "Who's in the Engineering department?"
- "Show me new hires from last quarter"
- "How many employees are in each department?"
Workflows, tasks, and more
The assistant can also query:
- Workflows — "Show me active workflows" or "What workflows ran today?"
- Store orders — "Show me pending orders"
- Tasks — "What tasks are assigned to me?"
- Projects — "Show me active projects"
- Renewals — "What contracts are up for renewal this month?"
- Phone subscriptions — "List all active phone subscriptions"
- Access groups — "Show me all access groups"
Working with the canvas
When you ask a question, the assistant creates artifacts on the canvas — live, interactive data views that you can work with directly.
Interactive tables
Tables placed on the canvas are fully interactive. You can filter, sort, and search them yourself — just like the tables elsewhere in Velory. This is useful when you want to explore the data beyond the initial query.
Follow-up questions share context
The assistant sees what is currently on your canvas. When you filter a hardware table down to "laptops in repair", the assistant knows. Your next question — "who are they assigned to?" — picks up from your filtered view, not from scratch.
Charts and stat cards
The assistant can create visual summaries — charts showing breakdowns by category, department, or status, and stat cards highlighting key numbers.
Undo and redo
If you refine an artifact too far, use undo to go back to a previous state.
Making changes
The assistant can propose changes to your data, but nothing happens without your confirmation.
When you ask the assistant to make a change — for example, "Move John to the Sales department" — it creates a proposal card on the canvas showing exactly what will change. You review the affected records and fields, then click Confirm to apply, or dismiss the proposal.
The assistant currently supports proposing employee updates (department, status, job title, etc.) and creating Linear tickets.
Creating workflows
The assistant can help you build workflows:
- "Create a workflow that notifies the IT team when a new employee joins"
- "Build a workflow to deprovision software when someone is offboarded"
The assistant generates a workflow draft that opens in the workflow editor for you to review and publish.
Tips for better results
- Be specific — "Laptops expiring in Q2" works better than "what's expiring"
- Chain queries — Ask about hardware, then follow up with "who are they assigned to?"
- Use the canvas — Filter and sort tables yourself, then ask follow-up questions. The assistant reads from your current view.
- Ask for breakdowns — "Show me hardware by category" or "How many employees per department" creates visual summaries
Good to know
What can the assistant not do?
The assistant cannot:
- Perform budget or cost analysis
- Approve or reject requests
- Create forecasts or projections
- Access data beyond your permissions
- Make changes without your explicit confirmation
Is the assistant always accurate?
The assistant is AI-powered and in early preview. Treat chat answers as a helpful interpretation and verify the results on the canvas. The data tables and charts are the evidence — always check the rows, filters, and totals before acting on an answer. See the "Velory AI" article for more details on responsible use.
Does the assistant access my data?
The assistant uses your existing Velory permissions. It can only access data your account is allowed to see. Company data remains separated by company account. Your prompts and data are not used to train models.
