How do I delete a software service, plan or license?
Deletion in Software works from the bottom up: licences first, then the plan they sit on, then the service. Velory enforces that order rather than cascading a delete downwards, so nothing disappears as a side effect of removing something above it.
In this guide
Before you begin
You need Admin access to delete services, plans and licenses.
The order matters
| To delete a… | You must first |
|---|---|
| License | Nothing — a license can be deleted on its own |
| Plan | Delete every license on that plan |
| Service | Delete every plan on that service |
If you try to skip a step, the confirmation dialog opens but the confirm button is disabled and tells you what is in the way — "Delete all licenses before deleting this plan", or "This service has plans. Delete all plans before deleting the service."
This is deliberate. Removing a plan with live seats on it would silently revoke access for everyone holding one, so Velory makes you deal with the seats explicitly.
Delete a license
Single license
- Go to the service detail page and open the Licenses tab.
- Click the action menu on the license.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm.
Multiple licenses
- Select licenses using the checkboxes in the license table.
- Click Delete in the bulk action bar.
- Confirm.
Delete a plan
- Go to Assets → Software and open the service.
- Go to the Plans tab.
- Delete every license on the plan first — the bulk action above is the quickest route.
- Open the plan, or use its row menu, and choose the delete action.
- Confirm.
Delete a service
- Delete every plan on the service, following the steps above for each.
- On the service detail page, open the actions menu and choose the delete action.
- Confirm.
Retiring a whole service instead
If the company has stopped using a service altogether, deleting it one seat at a time is the slow route. When the service came from SaaS Discovery, Retire does the whole job in one action: it revokes every active license on the service, frees the seats and stops the cost, then keeps the record and its history under the Retired tab.
Retire cannot be undone. See How do I manage, monitor, ignore or retire a discovered service?.
Good to know
Can I undo a deletion?
No. Deleting a service, plan or license is permanent. The record and its assignment history go with it.
Should I delete or deprovision?
Deprovision, in most cases. If an employee no longer needs a license but you want to keep the record — for audit, or to reassign the seat later — Deprovision unassigns the license and suspends it, leaving the record intact.
Delete is for records that should never have existed, or for cleaning up a service you are removing entirely.
What happens to the employee when I delete their license?
The license disappears from their profile. If automated provisioning is configured for the service, their access is revoked in the software as well; if not, access at the vendor is unaffected and you need to remove it there yourself.
The deletion does not appear on the employee's license activity log, because the license record it belonged to no longer exists.
Deleting dozens of licenses to remove one plan is tedious. Is there a faster way?
Use the license table's bulk selection: filter to the plan, select all, and delete in one action. Select-all works across pages, so you are not limited to what is on screen.
Is a suspended or expired license still blocking my plan delete?
Yes. The guard counts licenses on the plan, not only active ones. Any license record on the plan has to go before the plan can.
