How do I use custom attributes on employees?

Updated 3 weeks agoSara AhlénEmployee Management

Custom attributes are your own fields on the employee record — security clearance, T-shirt size, notice period, whatever your company needs to track and Velory does not ship.

Before you begin

Attributes are defined once, company-wide, in Settings, and you choose there whether an attribute applies to employees. You need Admin access. See How do I use custom attributes?.

Fill them in on a person

  1. Go to Employees → Employees and open the person.
  2. On the Details tab, find the Custom Attributes section.
  3. Enter the values and click Update.

The section carries a link through to the definitions, so you can add a missing attribute without hunting for the settings page.

Values save separately from the rest of the record, so a problem with a custom attribute is reported on its own rather than failing your other edits.

See them across everyone

Every employee attribute also becomes a column in the employee table, visible without being asked for, and sortable like any other. That is the way to scan a value across the whole company — who has not given a size, which clearances are missing. Hide the ones you do not need from the column picker in the toolbar.

Good to know

Can I filter the employee list by a custom attribute?

Not today. The filter panel covers the built-in fields only. Show the attribute as a column and sort by it instead, which answers most of the same questions.

Where do I create them?

Settings → Custom attributes. Each one has a name, a type, and the record types it applies to. Pick the type carefully — it decides what the field accepts.

What happens if I delete an attribute?

The field disappears from every employee's record and from the table. Treat the values as gone: nothing in Velory shows them afterwards, and there is no undo. Export first if they matter.

Can an integration fill them in?

Yes. An attribute can be mapped to a source field like the built-in ones, in which case it syncs and shows as locked on the record.

Do they appear on hardware too?

Only if the definition says so. An attribute declares which record types it applies to, and employee and hardware attributes are separate lists unless you deliberately share one.
