How do I use custom attributes on hardware?
Custom attributes let your company add extra fields to hardware beyond the standard ones. For example, you might add a "Department budget code" text field or a "Condition" dropdown. This guide explains how to fill them in on devices; defining them happens in Settings.

Before you begin
You need Admin access to create custom attributes. Admin or Manager access is required to edit custom attribute values on devices.
Create a custom attribute
Attributes are defined once, in Settings, and then apply to every device in the categories you attach them to. See How do I define custom attributes? for the field types, validation and category inheritance.
Set Applies to to Hardware, and the attribute appears in the Custom attributes section of a device's Details tab.
Fill in custom attributes on a device
- Go to Assets → Hardware.
- Click on a device to open its detail page.
- Scroll to the Custom attributes section at the bottom of the Details tab.
- Fill in or update the fields.
Required custom attributes are marked with an indicator. The page validates your input before saving.
Good to know
Where do custom attributes appear in the hardware list?
If your company has custom attributes defined for hardware, they appear as additional columns in the hardware table. You can show or hide them using the column picker. If the attribute is marked as filterable, it also appears in the filter panel.
Can custom attributes be imported via file upload?
Yes. When importing hardware from a file, your company's custom attribute fields appear as mappable columns in the import wizard.
Can I deactivate a custom attribute?
Yes. Edit the custom attribute in Settings and toggle Active off. The attribute will be hidden from devices but not deleted — you can reactivate it later.
